Rising shipping costs spell the end of Norridgewock Christmas wreath company - Press Herald
Monday, December 17, 2018Norridgewock company went out of business exactly, but he estimates he’s absorbed some of the product from “fir tippers” who harvest and sell boughs. At Maine Wreath & Flower in Freeport, owner Debbie Cupo said pricing by size has affected her business too, but there’s not much she can do to change the size of boxes or get a better rate.“It just affects the bottom line,” Cupo said. “I don’t make as much money.” She said she is not willing to pass on the extra cost to her customers. “They’re unconditional, so I just don’t make as much. It’s difficult.”Winter wreath making is a New England tradition, and Cupo said she sends her products to customers around the country. Most of her sales are sent out of state.Kell, of Kelco Industries, said the early winter storms this year have “kept people out of the woods who would be collecting the tips, and every wreath producer is behind by a week to 10 days.” His company produces about 5 million wreath rings annually, of which about 25 percent, or 1 million, are sold to wreath-makers in Maine, suggesting the state probably has a few thousand wreath-making operations.Kell said another small industry trend is the “buy-local” movement that has wreath-makers popping up in other parts of the country, decreasing the demand from traditional sellers in New England. 2017 Valentine's Day gift and travel guide - Queens Chronicle
Tuesday, February 07, 2017Atlantic City. Whoopie pies are a southern treat, but the sweetest that I have ever tasted are those frmo Wicked Whoopies (wickedwhoopies.com), surprisingly made in Freeport, Maine, a Portland suburb famous for its outlet shopping. Former investment banker Liz Fife recently started a New York-based company, Batter & Cream (batterandcream.com), that specializes in whoopie pies.Cheryl’s (cheryls.com) has a Valentine’s Day gift box of its popular cookies while Harry & David’s has gift baskets of its popular Moose Munch popcorn as well as its many other confections.Couples who are coffee drinkers and who don’t mind a touch of saccharine kitsch should purchase Care Bears his and hers mugs. For the spirits industry, Valentine’s Day ranks just behind New Year’s Eve in terms of sales numbers. Liqueurs such as Godiva Dark Chocolate Liqueur, Baileys Old Irish Creme, Kahlua and Baileys Salted Caramel and Bailey’s recent creation, Espresso Café Creme, are safe bets. France is renowned for red wine but Calvados Boulard is a fine brandy from its Normandy region. Ireland now has competition in the cream liqueur industry as evidenced by South Africa’s Amarula Cream.Sparkling wines such as France’s Lillet Rose and Italy’s Banfi Rosa Regale are also synonymous with romance. If you want a slight sweet touch to somewhat harder alcohol, try Smirnoff Wild Honey Vodka or Balvenie Caribbean Cork.If you prefer smooth over sweet, Glenfiddich 12, Macallan, Usquaebach and Johnnie Walker Black Label (the Blue Label will cost you over $200) are great options in the scotch whisky mark... http://www.qchron.com/editions/central/valentine-s-day-gift-and-travel-guide/article_4aa66bda-ed48-11e6-bf6c-63e4ccbee247.html

MeyerLocal honey from Sacramento Beekeeping Supplies ($6-$7 per pound plus container)One of the best ways to taste the flavors of Sacramento is through its honey. At Sacramento Beekeeping Supplies, you can choose from a variety of single-flower honeys that highlight different notes and aromas. The orange blossom honey, for instance, has a distinct orange zest flavor and gentle bitter finish and is good with tea. The wildflower is more nuanced, with caramel and floral notes, perhaps has slight grassy aroma, and an overall richness that many like for baking. For a hefty gift, consider a 4-pound jar for $27.95 to $31.95. Sacramento Beekeeping Supplies (2110 X St.); 916-451-2337; www.sacramentobeekeeping.com. B.A.R.Matchbook The Arsonist 2012 red table wine ($22)A bottle of wine can’t be beat as a go-to holiday gift. Plenty of regional vintners offer rich wines for a fair price, but in this case, we’re looking at Yolo County and a petit verdot-based wine that offers a full-bodied drinking experience, a moderate alcohol level of 13.8 percent and a very reasonable price tag. This densely colored wine is blended with cabernet sauvignon and merlot for a Bordeaux-like blend that pairs smashingly with a juicy holiday roast. Better Than Roses - The Newtown Bee
Sunday, February 10, 2019The Sunshine Bouquet Company began in New Jersey before branching out to Florida and Columbia, which allowed “Sunshine to provide efficient, rapid delivery to the United States.”Ms Brisch said Big Y also offers flower bouquets and potted plants from local farms, like Cavicchio Greenhouse in Sudbury, Mass. Since Big Y is headquartered in Springfield, Mass., its local farms are located in Massachusetts or Connecticut. Newtown Big Y Store Director Angelo Soto shared a list of all of its local farms, and those include Casertano’s Greenhouse in Cheshire, Connecticut Valley Flower in Hamden, Geremia Greenhouse in Wallingford, and Grower Direct in Somers.“There are so many local things to chose from,” said Ms Brisch. From choosing to support a conscientious company to finding ways to support local farms there is more to consider than just the color of a bouquet’s assorted flowers.Off-Season OptionsConnecticut-grown flowers can be hard to find in the winter.Natalie Collette of The Gardenist of Norwalk offers floral arrangements and designs, along with garden design support and maintenance, according to her Facebook page, The Gardenist. She mostly sells her flowers to local florists and people who contact her directly. A farmer florist, Ms Collette said she has private properties where she plants seasonal flowers, all organically. She harvests and creates bouquets along with maintaining a dahlia farm in New Haven. Growers in Connecticut, unless they have a greenhouse, do not grow flowers out of season, she observed. This makes it harder for local shops to maintain locally grown flowers in the winter months. When asked for ideas for alternative Valentine’s Day presents, Ms Collette recommended gifting a living flower arrangement or foraging for a bouquet of seasonal elements. Potted plants from a nursery also provide year-long enjoyment.“If it is a perennial, you can enjoy the plant from when you purchase it [until you] plant it in the spring,” said Ms Collette, who is currently selling house plants.Around mid-January, Evelyn Lee of Butternut Gardens LLC of So... https://www.newtownbee.com/better-roses/02102019
